There is nothing wrong with 'impressive imagery' - as long as a site requires it. Photos, audio samples, slideshows and video introductions are fantastic at helping you to stand out from your competition... However, they must be used to enhance the 'viewer's experience', as many sites just end up confusing people.
The main job of a web designer is to provide the viewer with a clear, easy-to-use web site so they can quickly get to the information they are looking for.
For example a web site designed for a shop selling computer games needs a lot of images, video and interactive components. However, a site for a local school or hospital would need a more basic look with the attention focused on clear, intuitive navigation, in-depth and informative content with keywords and jargon linked through to a glossary to explain their meaning.
